A Worldwide Invitation to Endeavor Together:
Duc In Altum!
Duc In Altum!
Words of Wisdom: The greatest experiment for humanity is that we treat life as precious, beautiful, and mysterious. SAGI’s ambition is to integrate science, technology, medicine, education, philosophy, and theology to provide hope a reality for those in need. There is an opportunity to identify and reconcile wisdom gained from past achievements with emergent therapies and technologies directed towards human health and wellbeing. SAGI shares this invitation to all individuals and organizations to join our Endeavor Together initiative to support the Magnum Opus of SAGI.
THE GREATEST EXPERIMENT
Duc in Altum! These Latin words translate to, “Put out into the deep.” From the Gospel of Luke, the story of Simon (who would later become St. Peter, the First Pope), James and John had been fishing throughout the night without success. Jesus spoke to His future disciples “Duc in Altum,” which command brought about a miraculous catch of a vast number of fish. This vocation resonates with SAGI’s commitment to illuminate and cultivate three pillars of human life, namely science, faith, and wisdom, alongside other individuals and organizations.
In SAGI’s inaugural article (1), “Invitation to be a Torchbearer for Illuminating Life!”, future SAGI members (torchbearers) were welcomed to participate in our initiative entitled Endeavor Together, which encompasses our ambition to build a worldwide and multidisciplinary alliance of individuals and organizations conducting virtuous and philanthropic science, fostering a deep faith in God, and sharing life lessons of wisdom.
The SAGI multi-volume Chronicle, The Greatest Experiment, assimilates the three overarching themes of science, faith and wisdom alongside other special features; inaugural articles have been written by our leadership team and early torchbearers (1-20). For each of us, life itself is our greatest experiment, as we have been created in the image of God and blessed with a personality and talents to do good works and graciously love one another. To this end, we also have encompassed the spirit of endeavoring together with reflections on the meaning of being a torchbearer and multidisciplinary education. To this end, we invite you to consider submitting an article of your own in The Greatest Experiment!
VIRTUOUS SCIENCE
SAGI is paving the way for virtuous science in an unprecedented way. We are focused on establishing relationships with scientists from academia, biotech, pharma, contract R&D organizations as well as investors in drug discovery to promote virtuous science that is generating good medicines. Whereas empirical benchwork may be challenging and biological disease mechanisms may be multifaceted, we believe that bringing together passionate scientists with deep scientific know-how as well as love and respect for God and human life will facilitate and improve the drug discovery and development process, better addressing unmet needs. The integration between a multidisciplinary knowledge and state-of-the-art technology is critical to the success of contemporary biomedicine. We encourage passionate scientists within academia, biotech and pharma to share their experiences and perspectives on historical, contemporary, and future good medicines in our initiative SAGI Good Medicines: Providing Hope a Reality.
INSPIRING FAITH
As a complement to virtuous science, we are advancing a Theocentric Education initiative. This inaugural effort looks to build alliances with various educational institutes and think-tanks to generate multimedia educational materials for various fields of study. We will strive to highlight aspects of life that may be taken for granted, from microscopic mechanisms that sustain natural life to studies of the heavenly bodies of the universe. Throughout our initiatives, we will share how one can realize God as The Inimitable Designer of Life and the essence of all existence. We invite both experts and new educators to contribute to this effort to synergistically build this content. We have already established an inaugural network with the Cardinal Newman Society, the Holy Protection Monastery, the Saint Benedict Center, the Fraternal Society of Saint John the Apostle, and the Chesterton Schools of the Society of G.K. Chesterton. SAGI aims to establish partnerships with educational institutes and nonprofit organizations worldwide to promote theocentric education.
SEEKING WISDOM
Wisdom is a gift from God, and SAGI encourages humanity to always seek wisdom in all actions for the glory of God and betterment of human society. SAGI’s Seeking Wisdom at the Crossroads of Life initiative will be showcased through multimedia real-life stories that reflect upon the virtue of wisdom in daily life. We are looking to establish a podcast series called ‘Soundbytes for Sagacity’, and promulgate an online portal for Good Books, Art and Music. For wisdom both captivates the human imagination and instills spirituality– a sense of seeing more clearly the sacraments or signs of God in earthly life. Our first Seeking Wisdom article (18) shares a foundation upon which we wish to build a synergistic interface between science and faith.
SAINT ALBERT THE GREAT, PATRON SAINT OF SCIENTISTS & STUDENTS
Saint Albert the Great (Albertus Magnus) is the patron saint of science students. His life exemplifies the harmony that results from bringing together science, faith and wisdom. We invite all to read our SAGI Chronicle article, “Saint Albert the Great: Scientist, Theologian & Philosopher” (4) and listen to our SAGI Soundbyte. “Who was Saint Albert the Great?” (21).
